LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will host Alabama State University Saturday for Senior Day at 3 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Alcorn (8-16, 8-5 SWAC) will honor seniors Brianna Luton, Talisa Sherman, Tori Spann and Henrietta Wells with a ceremony after the game.
The Lady Braves most recently suffered a 61-56 setback at UAPB where junior Alexus Freeman totaled 11 points, eight boards, five assists and five steals. Freeman has a team-high 14.5 points per game in SWAC play.
Luton, meanwhile, has knocked down multiple treys in 10 of 13 league games. She ranks second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage and threes made per game.
Junior Tia Sanders has scored 10-plus in 17 of 24 games this season. Freeman (14.5), Sanders (12.0) and Luton (10.2) are all averaging double digits in league play.
Wells' 2.9 blocks per game ranks atop the SWAC and 12th in Division I. She has recorded at least one block in all but one contest and multiple blocks in 18 including nine of the last 10.
Luton dropped a team-high 17 points as the Lady Braves led after three quarters at ASU but fell after a 30-7 fourth-quarter deficit.
Behind the SWAC's leading scorer Britney Wright, the Lady Hornets have won their last two games against Alabama A&M University and Mississippi Valley State University.
ASU tops the conference in free throw percentage (.725), scoring defense (56.4) and scoring margin (+8.3).
NOTES
- Junior Miracle Rushing's 3.1 offensive rebounds per game ranks third in the SWAC.
- Alcorn has locked down opponents from three-point range to the tune of 21.4 percent (28-131), which is the best mark in the league.
- The number 70 has a significant impact on Alcorn's W-L record. The Lady Braves are 11-1 in league play when scoring 70-plus points and 1-6 when allowing 70-plus dating back to last season.
- The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to Dejah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year's squad. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while Alcorn has been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for 19 straight games.
