LORMAN, Miss. – With four games remaining to claim a top-four seed to host the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program looks to rebound against Alabama A&M University Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Monday is also Alcorn Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night which includes free admission for all faculty and staffers when they present their ID. There will also be an opportunity to win an Alcorn themed gift basket.

Alcorn (8-17, 8-6 SWAC) nearly erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit before dropping Saturday's contest 62-56 to preseason favorite Alabama State.

Junior Miracle Rushing grabbed 13 of the team's 47 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. She also added 10 points for her first career double-double and a team-high four steals. The Lady Braves tallied 25 offensive boards, the highest mark in a contest this season.

Fellow junior Alexus Freeman fronted Alcorn's offensive attack with 13 points. Senior Tori Spann rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10, including four from the charity stripe.

The Lady Braves outrebounded the Lady Hornets, a team that entered the game with a SWAC-best +6.6 rebounding margin, 47-41.

Alcorn is looking to sweep AAMU after topping the Lady Bulldogs 73-57 in Huntsville earlier this season behind a career-high 24 points from Freeman.

AAMU (2-20, 0-13 SWAC) is still searching for its first win in conference play.

Lady Bulldogs guard Jameica Cobb is the league's top-scoring freshman at 12.0 points per game. Ebony Johnson also adds 9.6 points and a team-high 6.3 boards per contest.

NOTES

  • Freeman ranks seventh in league play in points per game (14.4), third in assists per game (3.7) and second in steals per game (2.5)
  • Rushing's 3.4 offensive rebounds per game ranks third in the SWAC.
  • Senior Brianna Luton has knocked down multiple treys in 10 of 14 league games. She ranks second in the conference in threes made per game (2.0) and third in three-point field goal percentage (.378).
  • Junior Tia Sanders has scored 10-plus in 17 of 25 games this season. She has knocked down a team-best 77.5 percent from the charity stripe in SWAC play.
  • Senior Henrietta Wells' 2.9 blocks per game ranks atop the SWAC and 12th in Division I. She has recorded at least one block in all but one contest and multiple blocks in 18. Alcorn is tied for the league-lead in blocks per game (3.8) with Southern.
  • Alcorn has locked down opponents from three-point range to the tune of 21.8 percent (31-142), which is the best mark in the league.
  • The number 70 has a significant impact on Alcorn's W-L record. The Lady Braves are 11-1 in league play when scoring 70-plus points and 1-6 when allowing 70-plus dating back to last season.
  • The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to Dejah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year's squad. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while Alcorn has been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for 20 straight games.
