LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will look to extend its winning streak to three games in a Saturday afternoon bout against in-state rival Jackson State University at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. First tip is set for 3 p.m. CT.
Alcorn (6-14, 6-3 SWAC) is coming off of victories over Alabama A&M and Southern, most recently topping the Lady Jags at home by utilizing its full-court defensive pressure to accumulate 43-31 second-half and 24-13 fourth-quarter advantages.
Junior Alexus Freeman tallied her second consecutive 20-plus point and fifth 15-5-5 performance. She totaled 20 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six steals.
Junior Tia Sanders (11) joined Freeman in double figures and has scored 10-plus in 15 of 20 games this season. Freeman (14.8) and Sanders (11.8) are both averaging double digits in league play.
Senior Brianna Luton knocked down multiple treys for the seventh time in SWAC play. She ranks atop the league in three-point field goal percentage (46.5) and second in threes made per game (2.3).
Senior Henrietta Wells' 3.0 blocks per game ranks atop the SWAC and 14th in Division I. She has recorded at least one block in all but one contest and multiple blocks in 15 including each of the last six.
The Lady Braves bested the Lady Tigers 70-53 in Jackson earlier this season behind a season-best 58.3 percent mark from long range. The 70 total points scored tied the most by this year's team as Alcorn also dropped 70 at Houston on Dec. 28.
After topping Alabama A&M in its SWAC opener, JSU (7-12, 1-8 SWAC) has dropped eight in a row.
One key to victory for Alcorn will be to keep the Lady Tigers off the offensive glass as JSU ranks atop the league with 16.4 offensive rebounds per contest.
Lady Tigers post Kierra Adams fronts the squad averaging 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in league play.
Fans attending Saturday's game can expect plenty of treys as the two sides rank 1-2 in threes made per game and three-point field goal percentage.
NOTES
• Senior Tori Spann chipped in nine points against Southern, matching a season high.
• The number 70 has a significant impact on Alcorn's W-L record. The Lady Braves are 10-1 in league play when scoring 70-plus points and 1-6 when allowing 70-plus dating back to last season.
• Alcorn ranks second in the league in steals per game (9.6) and turnover margin (+3.7).
• The Lady Braves have forced 20-plus turnovers against five of eight SWAC opponents and are 4-1 in those games.
• The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to Dejah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year's squad. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while Alcorn has been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for 15 straight games.
