Streaking Braves Host Grambling State Monday

With a five-game winning-streak on the line, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will take on Grambling State at 7 p.m. Monday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
Monday is also Military/Veterans/Armed Forces Day. Military, veterans and armed forces can attend free of admission with a valid military ID or in uniform.
 
The Braves (10-11, 7-3 SWAC) have not lost a game in three weeks. During that span, they've posted home victories over UAPB 82-64, Southern 74-64 and Jackson State, and road wins at Alabama State 78-71 and Alabama A&M 81-70. Alcorn has won at least five games in a row three times over the last two seasons.

Alcorn enters Monday in second-place in the SWAC standings. It is two games behind Texas Southern for first-place, and one game ahead of Southern for third-place.
 
Junior Reginal Johnson leads the team with 15.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting .510 from the field. He's scored at least 12 points in 19 of the last 20 games, and has pulled down at least five rebounds in 20 of the last 21 contests. Johnson is also shooting a team-high .804 from the free throw line.
 
Senior Marquis Vance also nearly averages a double-double with 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He's tallied 66 career double-figure scoring games and nine double-doubles. Vance is 10 points away from reaching 1,200 for his career.
 
The Tigers (10-13, 5-5 SWAC) have won three of their last four, but are coming off a hard-fought 67-66 defeat at Southern on Saturday. Grambling had two looks to win it, but misfired on a three-point attempt and a jumper as the buzzer sounded.
 
GSU has four student-athletes averaging in double-figures. Ervin Mitchell leads the way with 16.5 points per game, Remond Brown 13.8, Averyl Ugba 11.1 and Nigel Ribeiro 10.1. Ugba also grabs 9.4 rebounds per outing.
 
NOTES
- The Braves are looking to win six consecutive games for the first time since 2006-07.
 
- Alcorn is 7-2 at home this season where it has outscored the opposition 692-556.
 
- The Braves have won four of the last five games against Grambling.
 
- In conference games, the Braves lead the league in field goal percentage defense (.383), three-point field goal percentage defense (.250), assist:turnover ratio (1.0), rebounding margin (+4.4), offensive rebounds (13.3 orpg) and defensive rebounds (27.8 drpg).
 
- Alcorn is 9-1 this season when leading at half, 5-0 when scoring over 80 points and 5-0 when holding the opposition to under 60 points. The Braves came back from a halftime deficit for the first time this season against JSU where they trailed 26-25.
 
- Vance is Alcorn's newest member of the 1,000-point club after he surpassed the mark against Blue Mountain on Nov. 22, 2016. He ranks top-10 in the league in rebounding, blocks and assists.
 
- Averaging just under double-figures, senior Denzel Dulin puts in 9.5 points per affair. He's registered at least eight points in eight of 11 conference games. Dulin netted a 17-point performance at AAMU. He scored a career-high 20 points at Colorado State on Nov. 27. In league games, Dulin ranks ninth in three-point percentage (.429).
 
- Junior A.J. Mosby has tallied seven double-figure scoring games in his last eight outings which included against UAPB where he neared a triple-double with 14 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. He's the only Brave to start in every game this year and also the only one to play 40 minutes in a contest. In league games, Mosby ranks second in the SWAC in assist:turnover ratio (1.8), seventh in assists (2.8 apg) and seventh in free throw percentage (.821).
 
- Senior DeAndre Davis is coming off five consecutive double-digit scoring games including a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds against Jackson State. He's grabbed at least six rebounds six of the last seven games. Davis is shooting .571 from the field in league games. He returned to the lineup for conference play after missing the previous nine games with a hand injury.
