LORMAN, Miss. – Looking for its fourth consecutive win, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program will host Grambling State University Monday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex on a 5:30 p.m. opening tip.
Monday is also Military/Veterans/Armed Forces Day. Military, veterans and armed forces can attend free of admission with a valid military ID or in uniform.
Alcorn (7-14, 7-3) extended its winning streak on a dominant 74-51 performance over in-state rival Jackson State. The Lady Braves commenced the contest on a 19-2 run that including a season-best 17 consecutive points.
Alcorn had four student athletes in double figures including junior
Tia Sanders (16), seniors
Brianna Luton (15) and
Henrietta Wells (13) and junior
Alexus Freeman (13). Wells neared a triple-double, adding a team-high eight rebounds and seven blocks.
The Lady Braves limited the SWAC's top offensive rebounding team to just 13 while grabbing 19 of their own.
Grambling (9-12, 7-3 SWAC) also produced four double-digit scorers in its most recent 70-63 win over Southern. The Lady Tigers had two players convert double-doubles in Jazmine Torian (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Shakyla Hill (12 points, 14 rebounds).
Hill, a Preseason All-SWAC First Team selection, matched Freeman with a game-high 19 points in the first outing between the two sides, which resulted in an 86-63 GSU victory. Alcorn is 6-1 since that outcome and has jumped four spots to fourth place in the league standings.
The Lady Braves are the SWAC's top three-point shooting team largely due to Luton and Sanders. Luton has drained multiple treys in eight of 10 conference contests while Sanders has a team-high 43 total threes.
