HOUSTON - The Alcorn State University women's basketball team will make one final push to up its seeding in the SWAC Tournament, beginning in a contest at Texas Southern University Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the H&PE Arena.
Alcorn (9-18, 9-7 SWAC) dropped its most recent contest 45-33 to Southern in Baton Rouge. Freshman Aysha Kirkland tallied a career-high five rebounds.
Senior Brianna Luton drilled multiple threes for the 12th time in league play. She ranks first in the conference in threes made per game and second in three-point field goal percentage.
Junior Alexus Freeman (13.9) and Luton (10.6) are averaging double digits in league play.
TSU (18-9, 11-4 SWAC) left the Whitney Complex with a 57-53 win earlier this season, outscoring the Lady Braves 18-12 in the final frame.
The Lady Tigers have won seven of their last nine contests and currently hold the No. 2 seed in the SWAC. TSU ranks just above Alcorn in points allowed per game at 57.1.
Lady Tigers guard Joyce Kennerson ranks second in the league with 20.1 points per game.
NOTES
- Senior Henrietta Wells' 2.9 blocks per game ranks atop the SWAC and 11th in Division I. She has recorded at least one block in all but one contest and multiple blocks in 20 including 11 of the last 13.
- Junior Miracle Rushing's 3.5 offensive rebounds per game ranks second in the SWAC.
- Alcorn has locked down opponents from three-point range to the tune of 22.4 percent (34-152), which ranks atop the league.
- The number 70 has a significant impact on Alcorn's W-L record. The Lady Braves are 12-1 in league play when scoring 70-plus points and 1-6 when allowing 70-plus dating back to last season.
- The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to Dejah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year's squad. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while Alcorn has been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for 22 straight games. Junior Tia Sanders also sat out the last two contests due to injury.
