Braves Prepare for Mid-Week Series at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Coming off a series win during the SWAC opener over the weekend, the Alcorn State University baseball program will play a pair of non-conference games Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Arkansas.
 
Alcorn (6-8, 2-1 SWAC) took two out of three from Mississippi Valley State over the past three days. Sophomore Conrado Skepple, who was named to the Preseason All-Conference Second-Team, picked up saves in back-to-back games after not allowing a hit in 2.1 innings. He leads the SWAC in saves with three on the year.
 
At the plate, senior Justin Barna went 4-for-12 (.333) with a pair of RBI.
 
Junior Wallace Rios Jimenez has reached base safely in all 11 games he's played in and ranks top-five in the SWAC with a .460 on-base percentage. He's also riding a four-game hitting streak.
 
Junior Kirt Cormier leads the team with a .327 batting average and a .449 slugging. He was named SWAC Hitter of the Week on Feb. 21 after batting for a .571 average, .625 on-base percentage and .857 slugging to begin the season.
 
Senior Daniel Belmont is expected to get the start Tuesday. He hoists a 1-0 record and 2.04 earned run average through 17.2 innings. Out of the bullpen, sophomore Carlos Lopez carries a 1.20 ERA through 15.0 innings.
 
The Braves are undefeated this year when leading after seven innings. They have outscored the opposition 15-8 in the seventh frame and 12-5 in the eighth.
 
The Razorbacks (12-4, 0-0 SEC) have won four of their last five. They won two of three against Rhode Island over the weekend after sweeping a pair of mid-week games against UL-Lafayette.
 
Jake Arledge leads the team at the plate with a .367 average and three homers. Grant Koch is the team's big-hitter with a .317 average, five homers and 19 RBI. Carson Shaddy has started all 16 games and hits for a .333 average with three homers and 16 RBI.
 
On the mound, right-hander Dominic Taccolini is expected to get the start for Arkansas. Taccolini is 3-0 this season with a 7.50 ERA in 12.0 innings. He's made one start and four appearances out of the bullpen.
 
Wednesday's starters are still to be announced by both teams.
 
Alcorn will resume league action this weekend when it travels to Jackson State for a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in Biloxi, Mississippi.
