Lady Braves Drop a Pair of Games to EKU

LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University softball program fell 8-0 and 12-4 in a twinbill against Eastern Kentucky University Tuesday afternoon at the Alcorn Softball Complex.

Game 1 - EKU 8, Alcorn 0 (6 inn.)

Junior pitcher Robin Harrison (1-4) tossed her fifth complete game of the season, allowing nine hits and eight runs (four earned). She also struck out a career-high eight batters during the 101-pitch outing.

The Lady Braves (3-15) were only able to manage two hits, both of which were infield singles by senior Adrianna Gutierrez and junior Mariah Ortiz

The Colonels (9-14) scratched three runs in the first and fifth and two runs in the sixth to take the victory. EKU's starter Alex Sallberg (3-6) got the win, scattering two hits while striking out nine.

Game 2 - EKU 12, Alcorn 4

Junior Jessica Crum secured her seventh multiple-hit and sixth multiple-RBI game of the season as she went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo homer.

After EKU scratched a run in the top of the first on a planned first-and-third rundown, junior first baseman Taylor Hughes plated senior Sametria Collins on a single up the middle to tie the game in the bottom half.

Sophomore third baseman Victoria Tyler then hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Gutierrez, giving the Lady Braves a 2-1 advantage.

Unfortunately the Colonels would tack on eight runs in the next four innings while holding Alcorn scoreless to make it 10-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Braves were down to their last out when Crum smashed a double to center during a 13 pitch at-bat that scored Hughes and extended the contest.

EKU scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. Crum then hit the aforementioned home run on the first pitch of her at-bat to conclude the scoring.

Alcorn returns to action Wednesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Mississippi College. The Lady Braves will then face Grambling Thursday and Friday at the Alcorn Softball Complex to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
