Braves Continue to Hit Despite Dropping Series at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Posting nine more hits Wednesday, the Alcorn State University baseball program continued to get on base but fell 11-3 to Arkansas at Baum Stadium.

The Braves (6-10, 2-1 SWAC) registered 20 hits over the two-game series against the Razorbacks (14-4).

For the second day in a row, junior A.J. Makarewicz knocked a pair of hits. He finished four-for-eight (.500) for the series. Also with multi-hit games Wednesday, senior Justin Barna and junior Kirt Cormier both ended two-for-four.

Barna now has a seven-game hitting-streak.

With a walk in the first inning, junior Wallace Rios Jimenez extended his on-base streak to 13 games.

Arkansas scored five runs in the first inning, but Alcorn got on the board in the third with a one-out double by Barna. It plated Makarewicz who led off the frame with a single to left field and advanced to second on a hit through the left side by Cormier.

The Braves tacked on another in the fifth with a homer to right field by Cormier. It was his second long-ball of the season after he blasted one against Prairie View A&M on Feb. 18.

Alcorn's final tally came in the eighth on a one-out single up the middle by senior Jason Sanez. It scored Barna after he walked and advanced to second on a groundout.

On the mound, senior Daniel Belmont (1-1) lasted 5.0 innings and struck out four. Sophomore Conrado Skepple tossed a scoreless frame in the eighth. Kacey Murphy (2-0) was credited the win for Arkansas.

Alcorn will resume league action this weekend when it travels to Jackson State for a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in Biloxi, Mississippi.
