Braves Resume Conference Play at JSU this Weekend

BILOXI, Miss. – Looking to win its second consecutive conference series to start the year, the Alcorn State University baseball program will make a short trip north to face Jackson State in a three-game series.
 
Game one will be played in Biloxi, Mississippi at 7:05 p.m. Friday at the MGM Park. Games two and three will take place at Bob Braddy Field at Jackson State on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
The Braves (6-10, 2-1 SWAC) are coming off a mid-week series against Arkansas where they racked up 20 hits over two games. Junior A.J. Makarewicz notched a pair of multi-hit games, and junior Wallace Rios Jimenez registered three hits in game one.
 
Alcorn gave Arkansas a big scare in the first contest as the Braves led 2-1 after six innings. The Razorbacks had two rally for two runs in the final three frames to get the win.
 
Rios is riding a 13-game on-base streak which includes every game he's played in this season. Senior Justin Barna is on a seven-game hitting streak and leads the SWAC with five doubles.
 
Alcorn opened conference play last weekend and took two out of three from Mississippi Valley State. Sophomore Conrado Skepple picked up saves in back-to-back days after not allowing a hit in 2.1 innings. He leads the SWAC with three saves on the year and the Braves are undefeated when leading after seven innings.
 
Junior Kirt Cormier leads the team with a .328 batting average which ranks top-10 in the league, and a .492 slugging which is sixth. He blasted his second homer of the year Wednesday at Arkansas. Senior Jason Sanez is also above the .300 mark with a .308 average.
 
The Tigers (13-7, 4-2 SWAC) swept MVSU on the road to begin conference but dropped two out of three at home to Alabama State last weekend. JSU is coming off a 2-0 win over UL-Monroe on Wednesday.
 
Lamar Briggs leads the team with a .373 average and 15 RBI and has started in all 20 games at various positions as a utility player. On the mound, Miguel Yrigoyen has been nearly unhittable with a 0.90 ERA in 30.0 innings.
 
All three games can be heard via radio on 91.7 FM with Charles Edmond as the voice of the Braves.
