Tigers Even Series, Force Rubber Match Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball program fell 16-4 in seven innings to Jackson State on Saturday at Bob Braddy Field.

It evened the series 1-1 after the Braves (7-11, 3-2 SWAC) defeated the Tigers (14-8, 5-3 SWAC) 5-4 in the opener Friday.

Saturday's game was highlighted by a two-run homer by senior Patrick McMahon. It came in the second inning when Alcorn trailed 3-0. The Braves executed a bloop and a blast with two outs as senior Jason Sanez singled to left field and McMahon followed with his second dinger of the year. Sanez and McMahon are now tied for the team lead with 11 RBI apiece.

The Braves scored two more runs in the third inning. Senior Walter Vives ripped an RBI double to left field to score junior Nicholas Hayes-Saltare, and senior Justin Barna followed with an RBI single.

Vives is now four-for-seven in the series (.571).

In the same inning, junior Wallace Rios Jimenez drew a walk which extended his on-base streak to 15 games.

Senior Regynold Johnson (0-2) took the loss for Alcorn. Senior Daniel Corona pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Jordan Bolden threw all seven innings for the Tigers and picked up the win. Calvin Newsome turned in a four-for-four day at the plate.

The series finale will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Braves will look to win their second straight conference series after taking two-of-three from Mississippi Valley State last weekend.
