LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University softball program dropped 2-0 and 6-1 contests to Southeastern Louisiana University Tuesday afternoon at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
SLU 2, Alcorn 0Â
The Lady Braves managed two hits in the first game as junior Mariah Ortiz ripped a single up the middle in the first to extend her hitting streak to 10 games and fellow junior Robin Harrison poked a single to left-center field in the sixth.Â
"We did well. We had some opportunities out there offensively early on and just didn't cash in," said Alcorn head softball coach Josef Rankin. "When you look at how we did defensively and pitching, we did a very good job there."
The Lady Lions scored their first run in the second. Back-to-back walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Maddie Edmonston then plated pinch runner Kinsey Nichols on an infield single to take a 1-0 lead.
SLU added its second run in the fifth when Mahalia Gibson plated Peyton Sutton on a double that landed in the left-center field gap.Â
Lady Lions pitcher Lacey Hill (6-5) picked up the win, striking out eight and walking two during the complete-game shutout.Â
Freshman Ambria Dorsey took the loss despite allowing a season-low five hits and two runs during the start. Junior Madi Creed tossed 1.1 perfect innings and struck out one.
"Ambria did great. We are really trying to build confidence and consistency with her. She lost focus a little in the second inning but got it back and did a great job at making pitches," said Rankin.
SLU 6, Alcorn 1Â
The Lady Lions (14-15) tallied four runs in the first two innings and held the Lady Braves (6-19) hitless through the first 3.2 innings while picking up the win in the second game of the twinbill.Â
Senior Sametria Collins walked, advanced to second on a groundout and landed on third after a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Jessica Crum then drove her in on a single to left center.Â
Senior Adriana Gutierrez finished with two of Alcorn's three hits.Â
Creed (2-5) dropped the decision as she allowed eight hits and five runs and struck out one in four innings of work. Junior Robin Harrison tossed three innings and allowed just one run on two hits while whiffing two SLU hitters.Â
Lady Lions starter Rachel Hayes (5-5) earned the win, striking out six during 6.1 innings pitched.Â
