Rios Jimenez Extends On-Base Streak to 20 Games at Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – With a pair of hits, junior Wallace Rios Jimenez highlighted the night for the Alcorn State University baseball program in a 13-5 defeat to Nicholls State on Tuesday at Ray E. Didier Field.

Rios increased his on-base streak to 20 games and his hitting-streak to five. He registered his seventh multi-hit game of the season.

Alcorn (7-16, 3-6 SWAC) got on the board first in the second inning. Senior Patrick McMahon was hit by a pitch to leadoff the frame and advanced to second on a single to right field by sophomore Brandon Barna. Both runners moved up a base after a failed pickoff attempt resulted in an error. McMahon scored on a double play ground ball.

The Braves went up 2-0 in the third inning on an RBI single down the left field line by junior Der'Vincent Hamilton. It plated junior Devin Walden who walked and advanced to third on a hit to right field by Rios.

After the Colonels (14-11, 5-4 SLC) scored a pair in the bottom of the third to tie it, Alcorn responded with three runs in the fourth to leap back in front 5-2. The Braves took advantage of a pair of errors to score their first run, and Rios cashed in on an RBI knock to left field. A squeeze play by Hamilton scored Walden from third who originally reached on a throwing error in the infield.

Though, Nicholls batted around in the bottom of the fourth to score five runs and take a 7-5 lead. The Colonels added-on with a run in the fifth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Senior Daniel Corona (0-1) made his first start of the season and struck out four in 3.2 innings. Seniors Regynold Johnson and Austin Willis-Greene, and sophomore Tyler Smith made appearances out of the bullpen.

The Braves chased Nicholls starter Zach Autin out of the game after two innings. Daniel Goff (2-1) entered in relief and tossed 6.0 innings to pick up the win without allowing an earned run.

The contest marked the first of a 12 game road trip for Alcorn which will go 26 days between home games. The Braves and the Colonels will square off again Wednesday at 6 p.m.
