Lady Braves Fall 69-60 to PVAMU, Travel to Southern as Fifth-Seed in SWAC Tourney

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Despite a 20-8 advantage in points off the bench, The Alcorn State University women's basketball program dropped a 69-60 decision to Prairie View A&M University Saturday afternoon at the William J. Nicks Building.

Since the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff lost and Texas Southern University bested Southern University, Alcorn (9-20, 9-9 SWAC) will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Tuesday to face the Lady Jags. The game's starting time is TBD.

Senior Brianna Luton fronted the Lady Braves offensive attack with 15 points including a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the arc. This was the 13th league game in which she knocked down multiple treys. Senior Henrietta Wells, the league's top shot blocker, swatted four shots.

Lady Panthers (13-17, 8-10 SWAC) trio of Alexus Parker (22), Tori Carter (19) and Jeronia Allen (18) accounted for 59 of the team's 69 points.

A Luton three put Alcorn ahead 8-4 with 5:20 to go in the first quarter, but the Lady Braves hit a cold spell and missed their remaining 10 shots to trail 10-8 after the first frame.

The second quarter featured 42 total points including 20 from Alcorn. Junior Tia Sanders scored a team-high six points in the period on threes in back-to-back possessions. The Lady Braves trailed by just four at the half, 32-28.

Alcorn was outscored by just one in the third as PVAMU's lead reached as much as 10 before the Lady Braves fought back to enter the fourth down by just five at 51-46.

Alcorn was unable to mount the comeback in the fourth as the squad was outscored 18-14.

The Lady Braves finished the contest with a 17-12 edge in second-chance points.
