Braves Outhit Hornets in Defeat

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alcorn State University baseball program outhit Alabama State 12-9, but the Hornets finished on top 9-4 on Saturday in the second of a three-game series at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
 
Junior Wallace Rios Jimenez extended his league-leading on-base streak to 23 games by finishing two-for-four with a walk. Senior Kirt Cormier increased his on-base streak to 14 with a double down the left field line in the second inning, and scored on a double to right field by senior Patrick McMahon.
 
Eight of Alcorn's (7-19, 3-8 SWAC) nine starters recorded at least one hit in the contest.
 
The Hornets (13-15, 9-2 SWAC) struck early with two in the first inning and another in the third. They broke it open with six runs in the sixth frame and one more in the seventh to lead 9-1.
 
The Braves didn't give in as they plated a pair in the eighth. Senior Walter Vives led off with a single through the right side and came home on a triple to right-center by senior Justin Barna. Senior Jason Sanez followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Barna.
 
Alcorn added one more in the ninth on a wild pitch. It scored Rios who singled up the middle and advanced to third on a hit to right by Nicholas Hayes-Saltare.
 
Junior Der'Vincent Hamilton reached on an infield single in the second inning to extend his hitting-streak to eight games.
 
On the mound, senior Daniel Belmont (1-4) pitched 5.2 innings and struck out five. He gave up eight runs but only two were earned. Junior Razedrick Winters tossed the final 2.0 innings.
