LORMAN, Miss. - Team Purple won the 2017 Alcorn State University volleyball intrasquad scrimmage over Team White in straight sets Tuesday night at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
"Being young, it definitely has its advantages and disadvantages," said head coach Chelsey Nicholas. "Sometimes young girls feel that they have to be perfect, but they have to know to get on the court and just play volleyball. Our defensive specialists stood out tonight. They busted their butts and gave up their bodies."
Freshmen Daharri Thompkins and Fiapaipai Iosia led Team Purple on offense with four and three kills, respectively. Freshman Jasmine Chambers recorded a match-high 11 assists, and Iosia added three digs to her total.
For Team White, freshman Joeli Warren-Smith tallied four kills with a block and freshman Jasmine Youngthunder contributed with five assists and four digs.
Thompkins and freshman Omone Davies registered three aces apiece to lead the match. Other key contributors in the contest included freshman Jamiya Hoyt, junior Alondra Rivera Modesto, and freshman Mae Lewis.
"We made some mistakes tonight, but we're going to correct them and move on," added Nicholas. "That's something that we've been working on and we'll get better over time. We have to learn from our mistakes and use them to get better."
The squad opens its 2017 campaign Friday and Saturday at the University of New Orleans Invitational. The Lady Braves play the host Privateers on Friday at 10 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. match against Southeast Missouri State. Alcorn closes the weekend Saturday in a noon matchup with Fordham.
