Fordham Hands Alcorn Loss on Saturday

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Alcorn State University women's volleyball program wrapped up the University of New Orleans Invitational with a loss to Fordham Saturday at the Human Performance Center.

"This weekend we gained experience against some competitive teams," said head coach Chelsey Nicholas. "There were times we made immature mistakes, however it's a process that we need to go through. We will continue to trust that process and embrace the grind."

Several freshmen led the way for Alcorn in the loss. Jasmine Chambers totaled 10 assists, four digs and a pair of kills. Fiapaipai Iosia recorded a team-high 10 digs with three kills and an assist. Daharri Thompkins led the team on offense with four kills and added a dig and a block assist. Kaylyn Latin followed Iosia with eight digs.

Iosia earned All-Tournament Team honors and finished with 11 kills, four assists, and 33 digs on the weekend.

The Rams opened the first set with 11 straight points before a Thompkins kill got Alcorn on the board. The teams went back and forth and Fordham would take the set 25-10 for an early 1-0 match lead.

In set two, Fordham opened with a 4-0 run, but committed three straight errors. The Lady Braves knotted the score at 6-6 and again at 7-7, but the Rams seized control with runs of eight and six unanswered to go ahead 21-9. Four errors by Fordham allowed Alcorn to get to 23-13 and the Rams closed the set with back-to-back kills.

Set three mirrored set one as the Rams jumped to a 9-1 lead. Fordham used another 7-1 run and would take the set 25-12 and claim the match victory.

The Lady Braves are back in New Orleans on Monday as they play a 6 p.m. match at Loyola University.
