WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program starts the week with a doubleheader at Williams Baptist on Monday, followed by a 6 p.m. match at Millsaps on Tuesday in Jackson, Miss.
"I'm really excited about playing this double header tomorrow," said head coach Chelsey Lucas. "It gives us an opportunity to go into conference play on a positive note. These next two games will give us an opportunity to continue to work on the small details so we're ready for our SWAC opponents."
Freshman Fiapaipai Iosia and junior Singryd Valadares pace the Lady Braves attack with 63 and 61 kills respectively, while freshman Jasmine Chambers has 171 assists. Freshman Octavia Dixon has a team-high nine aces, followed by Iosia and senior Lurlethia Jones with eight aces each. The Alcorn defense is led by Iosia's 136 digs and junior Alondra Rivera Modesto's 15 blocks.
Williams Baptist | Sept. 18 | 3 p.m. / 5 p.m.
WBC (3-11) earned a 3-1 victory over Stephens College Friday night and is coming off a straight-set loss to Columbia College on Saturday. Audra Nailing leads the Lady Eagles with 92 kills, followed by Rachel Pirtle and Shelby Wallace with 82 kills apiece. Kayla Winfrey owns 177 assists while four players have served double-digit aces, led by Emery Davis with 11. On defense, Pirtle has recorded 36 blocks and Makenzie Moore has a team-high 118 digs.
Monday's doubleheader marks the first meeting between the two programs.
Millsaps | Sept. 19 | 6 p.m.
MC (4-6) went 1-1 on the weekend, falling in straight sets to Berry on Friday before rebounding with a straight-set win over Oglethorpe Saturday. The Majors are led offensively by Mckenzi Petricko's 90 kills, Regan Riddle's 17 aces, and Shelby Marsh's 182 assists. Ashley Zamjahn has made 202 digs and Morgan Vincent and Riddle have combined for 43 blocks.
The Majors took the only meeting between the two programs 3-0 in an Oct. 5, 2010 match played at the Hangar Dome in Jackson, Miss.
