HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program opens the week with a 6 p.m. match at William Carey Tuesday in the Ben Waddle Volleyball Facility. The team then heads to Natchitoches, La. on Thursday for a 1 p.m. game at Northwestern State's Prather Coliseum.
"I'm looking for progression, fight, consistency, and IQ of detailing the game," said head coach Chelsey Lucas. "If we stick to what we know is volleyball, we will win."
Junior Singryd Valadares and freshman Fiapaipai Iosia are pacing the Alcorn offense with 111 and 103 kills respectively. Freshman Jasmine Chambers has established herself as the primary setter with 293 assists, while Iosia and freshman Octavia Dixon have each served 15 aces. On defense, Valadares and junior Alondra Rivera Modesto have both tallied 19 blocks. Iosia leads the team with 251 digs, followed by freshman Kaylyn Latin at 195.
William Carey | Sept. 26 | 6 p.m.
The Lady Crusaders (8-6) earned a straight-set victory at home Saturday against Brewton-Parker (Ga.). Chassidy Harris leads the team this season with 147 kills, followed by Caroline Golden with 131 and Megan Zulli with 109. Gillian Tripp is the primary setter with 362 assists, while Golden has a team-high 18 aces. On defense, Emma Cotney own 182 digs and Harris and Zulli each have 24 blocks.
Tuesday's match marks the first meeting between the two programs.
Northwestern State | Sept. 28 | 61 p.m.
Thursday's game with the Lady Demons (5-11) will be the second meeting this season. Alcorn hosted Northwestern State on Aug. 30, with the visitors winning in straight sets. Hannah Brister led the way with nine kills, Kathryn Wristen chipped in 26 assists, and three Lady Demons served up two aces. Channing Burleson recorded 14 digs to lead the defense.
For the Lady Braves, freshman Daharri Thompkins had five kills and Chambers contributed eight assists with an ace. Valadares, Rivera Modesto, and freshman Kayla Anderson each made a pair of blocks. Iosia reached double-digit digs with 10.
Northwestern holds a 5-0 lead in the all-time series.
