Lady Braves Fall to William Carey, NSU

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program wrapped up a tough week Thursday with a loss at Northwestern State's Prather Coliseum. The team also fell at William Carey on Tuesday night.

Freshman Omone Davies led the Lady Braves in the two matches with nine kills, followed by junior Singryd Valadares with six. Freshman Jasmine Chambers contributed 21 assists, while Valadares and sophomore Melinda Perrilloux each served an ace. Freshmen Fiapaipai Iosia and Joeli Warren-Smith were the defensive leaders with 14 digs and three blocks respectively.

William Carey | L, 0-3 (13-25, 15-25, 13-25)

Davies scored six kills wit ha pair of blocks to lead the Lady Braves against the Lady Crusaders (9-6) on Tuesday. Chambers added 14 assists, Valadares earned an ace, and freshman Octavia Dixon recorded six digs.

Caroline Golden finished with 10 kills, two aces, and seven digs to lead the hosts. Megan Zulli chipped in nine kills and Chassidy Harris added eight, with Mikaela Hall tallying 18 assists. Emma Cotney made a team-high nine digs.

Northwestern State | L, 0-3 (13-25, 9-25, 11-25)

Freshman Daharri Thompkins, Davies, and Valadares each posted three kills Thursday against the Lady Demons (6-11). Chambers tallied seven assists and Perrilloux had an ace. Defensively, Warren-Smith had a pair of blocks followed by Valadares and junior Alondra Rivera Modesto with one each. Iosia reached double-digit digs with 11.

Hannah Brister and Alexis Warren scored nine and eight kills respectively for Northwestern State. Kathryn Wristen supplied 22 assists and Reagan Rogers served five aces. The Lady Demons were led defensively by Madeline Drake's three blocks and Megan Lohmiller's seven digs.

Alcorn and Northwestern State were tied at 5-5 early in set one, but the hosts used a 10-3 swing to pull away and grab the first match point. In the second set, the Lady Demons jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. NSU used a pair of 5-0 runs to take the second point. With the final set knotted at 3-3, the Lady Demons took off on a 7-1 run to help them capture the set and the match.

Alcorn returns to action this Sunday as the Lady Braves make the trip to Huntsville, Ala. for a 4 p.m. conference match at Alabama A&M.
