Alcorn Goes Back on the Road to Face MVSU, UAPB

ITTA BENA, Miss.
– The Alcorn State University men's basketball program will travel to games at Mississippi Valley State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the R.W. Harrison Complex, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7:30 p.m. Monday at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
 
The Braves (4-13, 0-4 SWAC) will look to shake off a pair of closely contested defeats last weekend at home. Alcorn was edged 60-55 by Jackson State and 72-61 by Grambling State as GSU didn't create separation until the final minutes.
 
Sophomore Maurice Howard scored in double-figures in both contests. He registered 12 points, three assists and two steals against JSU, and followed it up with 10 points and three assists against GSU. Howard drilled a pair of three-pointers in both games.
 
Senior A.J. Mosby averages a team-high 12.8 points per game. He leads the Braves in points, assists, steals and free throw percentage. Mosby's 2.3 assist:turnover ratio leads the conference. He also ranks fourth in the SWAC in both field goal percentage (.506) and in assists (3.6 apg).
 
Junior Dante Sterling scores 10.6 points per game and has made at least one three-pointer in every game this season. Sterling set his career-high at 17 points against Rust College on Dec. 1 and matched it at Prairie View A&M on Jan. 1.
 
In conference games, Sterling leads the team with 12.3 points per game, while Mosby is right behind with 11.5 points per match.
 
MVSU (0-16, 0-3 SWAC) is searching for its first win of the season. The Delta Devils fell at Alabama State 63-46 and Alabama A&M 65-55 last weekend. Dante Scott is the team's leader with 12.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He shoots .378 from three-point range and .821 from the free throw line.
 
UAPB (3-13, 3-0 SWAC) is off to a great unbeaten start in conference. The Golden Lions beat MVSU 80-71 before topping AAMU 69-62 and ASU 94-68. In conference games, UAPB leads the league in field goal percentage (.513) and three-point percentage (.510). Martaveous McKnight is one of the league-leaders in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game.

NOTES
- The Braves are looking to win in Itta Bena for the third straight year. Alcorn also knocked the Delta Devils out of the SWAC Championships last season 63-60 in Lorman.
 
- Alcorn is seeking its fifth consecutive win over UAPB. The Braves have not lost to the Golden Lions under head coach Montez Robinson who is in his third season.
 
- Robinson hoists a 26-14 SWAC record. He's tallied back-to-back second-place finishes with 13-5 records in conference. It was the first back-to-back winning seasons at Alcorn in 15 years. Robinson is the reigning SWAC Coach of the Year winner.
 
- As a team, the Braves lead the conference in field goal percentage defense (.447), assists (13.6 apg) and assist:turnover ratio (1.0). They are second in field goal percentage (.422) and three-pointers made per game (7.9). Howard drills 2.0 threes per game which is top-five in the SWAC.
 
- Alcorn is 4-0 this year when it outrebounds its opponent.
 
- The Braves played a loaded non-conference schedule including four games against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams. Alcorn went on the road to face LSU, Creighton, Northern Iowa, Baylor, Tulane, Iowa State, Vanderbilt and Central Arkansas.
 
- Tragedy struck Alcorn at Tulane on Nov. 29 when senior Reginal Johnson broke his right leg. Johnson was taken off on a stretcher and transported to a nearby medical facility after an air cast was placed on his leg. Johnson, the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
