BATON ROUGE – Coming off an undefeated home weekend, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will begin a three-game road swing Saturday when it heads to Southern for a 5:30 p.m. contest at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Alcorn (7-14, 3-5 SWAC) posted back-to-back double-figure wins over Alabama A&M and Alabama State last weekend. Senior
A.J. Mosby registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds vs. AAMU, and 19 points against Alabama State. Junior
Dante Sterling recorded a career-high 20 points against the Bulldogs.

The Braves defeated AAMU for the fifth straight time, and ASU for the fourth time in the last five meetings.

"We're playing good basketball right now and we need to continue playing at the level that we're capable of. Our seniors have to continue to step up," said Alcorn head coach
Montez Robinson.

Mosby averages a team-high 13.6 points per game and is shooting .882 from the free throw line. Mosby leads Alcorn in points, assists and steals.

Also averaging in double-figures, Sterling puts in 10.1 points per game and is shooting .370 from long range. He averages 10.1 points per game in conference, while sophomore
Maurice Howard averages 11.1 points per outing.

On the season, Alcorn leads the conference in field goal percentage (.426), assists (13.0 apg) and three-pointers per game (8.0). Howard sinks 2.2 threes per match which is fourth in the SWAC.

The Braves are shooting .355 from long-range as a team in conference games. Sterling is 13-36 (.389), Mosby is 15-36 (.417) and Howard is 20-56 (.357).

The Jaguars (8-13, 4-4 SWAC) are on a three-game winning-streak. It started with a 78-70 overtime win over Mississippi Valley State, followed by a 63-61 win over ASU and 62-61 against AAMU. In non-conference, SU defeated UT-Martin 69-66 and Florida A&M 68-50.

SU is led by Jared Sam who averages near a double-double with 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Sidney Umude is also a big contributor with 12.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per outing.

As a team, the Jaguars lead the league in field goal percentage defense, limiting teams to a .436 mark. Conversely, Alcorn is right there also holding teams to a .438 clip. SU also ranks first in the SWAC in offensive rebounding with 12.7 per game.

"Jared Sam is a walking double-double and demands the ball in the post," Robinson said. "We also have to try and stay in front of their guards who can really penetrate. We have to be able to control the pace and tempo of this game like we did last week at home."

- The last time Alcorn and Southern met, the Braves won 81-59 in semifinals of the 2017 SWAC Championships. Alcorn won all three meetings last year and is 4-1 against the Jaguars under head coach
Montez Robinson.

- Mosby leads the conference in assist:turnover ratio with a 2.3 mark. He also ranks third in the league in assists (3.6 apg) and fourth in field goal percentage (.506).

Montez Robinson hoists a 29-15 SWAC record. He's tallied back-to-back second-place finishes with 13-5 records in conference. It was the first back-to-back winning seasons at Alcorn in 15 years. Robinson is the reigning SWAC Coach of the Year winner.

- Alcorn got its first SWAC win at Mississippi Valley State 77-63 on Jan. 13. Mosby poured in a career-high 23 points and Howard drained 20 points, the second-most in his career. As a team, the Braves were 12-for-19 (.632) from long-range and Mosby and Howard combined to go 11-for-15 (.733). Alcorn posted its third straight win over MVSU.

- Tragedy struck Alcorn at Tulane when senior
Reginal Johnson broke his right leg. Johnson was taken off on a stretcher and transported to a nearby medical facility after an air cast was placed on his leg. Johnson is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
