LORMAN, Miss. – Seniors
Vanessa Monge and
Yaira Guardado will make their final appearances as student-athletes at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium this weekend when the Alcorn State University soccer program hosts Prairie View at 4 p.m. Friday and Texas Southern at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Lady Braves (0-12, 0-7 SWAC) can still make the 2018 SWAC Championships, but must win all of their last three games.
Both Monge and Guardado have been staples to Alcorn's program over the years. Monge has played in 38 games in three years, while Guardado has appeared in 52 matches in four years. Guardado has scored 10 career goals with six assists, and is currently Alcorn's leader goals, assists and points this year.
The duo will be honored before the game Sunday.
The Lady Braves are coming off a hard-fought weekend where they dropped a pair of very tight decisions. They fell to Southern 3-1 and Jackson State 1-0. Sophomore
Mireya Gonzalez scored against the Jaguars on a fast-break to tie the game 1-1 in the first half.
PVAMU (5-9-1, 3-3-1 SWAC) sits in seventh in the SWAC standings and is looking to clinch a top-eight spot. The Panthers also are coming off a tough weekend where they fell on the road to Grambling 2-0 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 1-0. Blair Lane leads the team with four goals on the year.
TSU (5-7-1, 5-2 SWAC) is in contention for the regular season title, but faced a setback last weekend by dropping games at UAPB 1-0 and GSU 1-0. Begona Bravo has scored four goals this year, while Gia Hodges has three.
The Lady Braves are looking for their first win over PVAMU since 2011. They have never beaten Texas Southern.
Alcorn will conclude the regular season on the road on Thursday, Oct. 25 when it travels to Mississippi Valley State for a 7 p.m. game under the lights.
