Lady Braves Look to Make a Splash at Second SWAC Round-Up

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The second of two SWAC Round-Ups will be played this weekend as the Alcorn State University volleyball program has five SWAC matches on the agenda this weekend on the campus of Alabama A&M University.

Alcorn (7-13, 3-6 SWAC), will kick it off Friday at 10 a.m. against Texas Southern and 7 p.m. versus Southern. Saturday's schedule pits Alcorn with Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. duel against Grambling State. The Lady Braves will wrap-up the weekend with a 10 a.m. match Sunday against Prairie View A&M.

The Lady Braves have won two straight since the return of freshman Sydney Joseph, their leading attacker. Joseph missed the previous two matches due to injury. She leads the SWAC in kills per set with 2.76.

Alcorn went 3-2 at the first SWAC Round-Up on Sept. 21-23. Joseph led the league with 62 kills over the five matches and hit for a .303 mark. She led the Lady Braves to wins over UAPB 3-0, GSU 3-0 and Southern 3-2.

"We are excited for this weekend and the opportunity to move up in the standings. We walked away with a winning record at the first round up, but we know teams will adjust to us. I'm looking for a lot of intensity and for us to play smart, fundamental volleyball," said Alcorn head coach Chelsey Lucas.

The Lady Braves have been one of the top serving teams in the nation. Alcorn ranks fourth in the country in aces per set with 1.89. The team ripped 15 aces in four sets against Lane College in a 3-1 victory in their last outing. Individually, sophomore Fiapaipai Iosia is third in the nation in aces per set with 0.74.

Iosia also leads Alcorn's back line in digs, averaging 3.24 per set. The Lady Braves have used a trio of setters, led by junior Barbara Cabo's 5.24 assists per frame. Sophomore Jasmine Chambers and freshman Jurnee Calhoun are also expected to see action.

The Lady Braves currently sit in seventh-place in the SWAC standings. The top-eight teams will qualify for the SWAC Championships on Nov. 16-18, hosted by Mississippi Valley State.
