ITTA BENA, Miss. – Looking to end the 2018 campaign on a high-note, the Alcorn State University soccer program will play its season-finale at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mississippi Valley State at the MVSU Soccer Complex.
Â
The Lady Braves (0-14, 0-9 SWAC) have dropped some hard-fought battles as of late, falling to Southern 3-1, Jackson State 1-0 and Texas Southern 3-1. MVSU (4-9-4, 1-5-3 SWAC) has also played a lot of close games including three ties.
Â
It will mark the final appearance in an Alcorn uniform for seniors
Yaira Guardado and
Vanessa Monge. The duo was honored Sunday at halftime against TSU on Senior Day.
Â
Guardado is the only Lady Brave to start in all 14 games this season. She leads the team with seven points including two goals and three assists. She's logged a team-high 1,248 minutes.
Â
Also with two goals this year, sophomore
Mireya Gonzalez scored one in Alcorn's last outing against TSU. It came on a fast-break after Guardado fed her through the defenders and she was able to rifle a shot past the goalkeeper.
Â
The Delta Devilettes have the league's leading goal scorer on their team. Laadi Issaka has registered a whopping 14 goals in 17 games.
Â
Alcorn is going for its first win over MVSU since a 2-0 result in 2011. The Lady Braves have never beaten the Delta Devilettes on the road.
