ITTA BENA, Miss. – The final game of the 2018 campaign saw the Alcorn State University soccer program find the back of the net twice, but fall 5-2 to Mississippi Valley State on a wet, misty Thursday evening at the MVSU Soccer Complex.
Â
Alcorn (0-15, 0-10 SWAC) trailed MVSUÂ (5-9-5, 2-5-3 SWAC) 1-0 in the 26th minute when freshman
Johanna Seelhorst scored her second goal of the year. It came after a turnover as Seelhorst was able to grab a steal and fire a shot from the top of the penalty box that went through the goalkeeper's hands and into the net.
Â
In her final appearance as a Lady Brave, senior
Yaira Guardado also scored and led the team with three shots. Her goal came in the 77th minute after she put home a rebound after a shot by junior
Christina Grybos.
Â
Guardado led Alcorn with three goals and three assists on the year. She logged a team-high 1,338 minutes including 90 on Thursday. Guardado was the only Lady Brave to start in all 15 games on the season.
Â
It was also the final game for senior
Vanessa Monge who played 72 minutes and recorded a shot on goal.
Â
Alcorn's goalkeepers played 45 minutes apiece. Junior
Giselle Rojas got the start and made four saves, while sophomore
Kameran Proby entered at the half and blocked seven shots.
"This was a season of struggle in every sense of the word. We went in with high hopes and expectations, but life has a way of humbling the best of us. Through the length and breadth of the season, we struggled with health issues, namely injuries and other serious medical concerns. For more than 75 percent of the season, more than 60 percent of the team carried injuries or illness. This made it near impossible to compete effectively with key players playing hurt without time to heal. However, we took the struggles to build strength and to help shape an identity going forward," said Alcorn head coach
Junior Noel.
