LYNCHBURG, Va. – Three games in four days is what's on slate for the Alcorn State University men's basketball program as they travel for a 1 p.m. (CT) Friday contest at Liberty, a 1 p.m. (CT) Saturday match against Savannah State and a 7 p.m. tip at Mississippi State on Monday.
Friday and Saturday's games will be played at the Vines Center, hosted by Liberty (3-1). The game between Alcorn (1-3) and SSU (2-4) will be a neutral site affair.
Through four games this year, junior Deshaw Andrews leads the Braves with 12.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per outing. He's scored in double-figures in three of four games including a 20-point performance at Tulsa. Andrews leads the SWAC with 2.0 steals per match.
Junior
Maurice Howard averages 11.5 points per game and leads the conference with 3.2 threes made per game. He drained seven three-pointers in a 79-55 win over Blue Mountain and registered a career-high 24 points. Howard helped the Braves win their seventh home-opener in the last eight years.
As a team, Alcorn ranks first in the conference in three-pointers made per game (7.6) and second in three-point percentage defense (.306).
Liberty won its first three games this year including a 77-70 victory over Kent State on the road. The team's only loss was a tight 79-70 decision at Vanderbilt. The Flames are led by Lovell Cabbil who scores 14.3 points per game, while Scottie James nearly averages a double-double with 12.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per outing.
SSU has wins over Middle Georgia State 105-95 and Tennessee Tech 97-83. The Tigers have five players averaging in double-figures including Zach Sellers who averages 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.
The Braves are currently on a five-game road trip. They'll return to the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they host Rust College at 11 a.m.
NOTES
- It will be Alcorn's first-ever meeting against the Flames. The Braves are 1-0 all-time against the Tigers with the only meeting coming in 1978-79, a 98-60 win.
- Junior
Reginal Johnson has returned to the court after sitting out for nearly 12 months. He etched 14 points off the bench in his first game back against Blue Mountain. Johnson, a 1000-point scorer, was the 2017-18 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, but broke his leg in the non-conference against Tulane and missed the rest of the way. He was a 2016-17 HBCU All-American and led Alcorn in scoring as a junior with 15.6 points per outing.
- The Braves are one of three teams in the country without a freshman on the roster along with South Alabama and UT-Martin.
- The Braves were picked to finish seventh in the SWAC Preseason Poll. They return one starter and seven letterwinners from a year ago.

Montez Robinson is in his fourth season at the helm. He hoists a 33-21 record in the league and was the 2016-17 SWAC Coach of the Year.
- Alcorn is in the midst of a loaded non-conference schedule which includes trips to Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Liberty, Mississippi State, UAB and South Florida.
