LORMAN, Miss. – The prequel to the football SWAC Championship game, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will take the floor at 11 a.m. Saturday against Rust College at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Admission to the game is free. Fans must purchase parking for the football game to get onto campus for the basketball game.
The sharp-shooting Braves (1-6) lead the SWAC in three-pointers made per game with 8.0. Individually, Howard is first in the league with 3.0 threes per outing. Howard also ranks third in the conference in minutes per game (33.5), fourth in three-point percentage (.369) and fourth in assists per game (3.3).
Junior Deshaw Andrews leads the Braves in both scoring, rebounding and steals. He averages 14.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest. His .460 field goal percentage is top-five in the SWAC. Andrews is coming off back-to-back 20-plus outings with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Savannah State, and a career-high 26 points and seven rebounds at Mississippi State.
Howard averages 11.4 points per game. He netted seven three-pointers in a 79-55 win over Blue Mountain and registered a career-high 24 points. Howard also drilled four threes and scored 18 points in his against Savannah State.
Rust (0-7) is looking for its first win of the year. The Bearcats are coming off a 102-62 defeat to Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday. Kortez Wade led Rust with 22 points and seven rebounds. He was 6-for-8 from three-point range.
The Braves are 4-0 all-time against Rust and are looking to beat the Bearcats for the third straight year. Last season, Alcorn won 89-50 as Howard drained 23 points.
Saturday will be the first of a three-game homestand for Alcorn as it also hosts Champion Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 and Fisk University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Montez Robinson. The Braves are looking to improve to 2-0 at home this year after winning their home-opener 79-55 over Blue Mountain.

Reginal Johnson has returned to the court after sitting out for nearly 12 months. He etched 14 points off the bench in his first game back against Blue Mountain. Johnson, a 1000-point scorer, was the 2017-18 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, but broke his leg in the non-conference against Tulane and missed the rest of the way. He was a 2016-17 HBCU All-American and led Alcorn in scoring as a junior with 15.6 points per outing.
- The Braves are one of three teams in the country without a freshman on the roster along with South Alabama and UT-Martin.
- Alcorn is in the midst of a loaded non-conference schedule which includes trips to Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Liberty, Mississippi State, UAB and South Florida.
