LORMAN, Miss. – Senior
Alondra Rivera Modesto will be honored at the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Monday as she and the Alcorn State University volleyball program host Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. on Senior Day.
Alcorn (9-19, 5-12 SWAC) must win in order to keep its hopes alive of making the SWAC Championships. The Lady Braves also need either Arkansas-Pine Bluff or Grambling State to lose the rest of their matches. Both UAPB and GSU currently have six conference wins, but Alcorn has the tiebreak on both teams.
"The only thing we can control tomorrow is our own match and we have to come out and take care of business on our court. We have the opportunity to end the regular season on a winning streak but we have to be able to execute and play smart," said Alcorn head coach
Chelsey Lucas.
The Lady Braves are coming off a thrilling 3-2 victory over Jackson State on Thursday. It came down to the last few points as Alcorn won 15-13 in the fifth on a kill by Modesto. The lone senior registered 22 kills and hit for a .395 percentage.
Modesto leads the team with 2.56 kills per set on the season. Freshman
Sydney Joseph is also at the top of the stat sheet with 2.51 kills per frame.
Alcorn has been using a two-setter system as of late with junior Barbara Cabo and freshman
Jurnee Calhoun. Sophomore
Jasmine Chambers has also been in the mix.
Defensively, sophomores
Fiapaipai Iosia and
Kaylyn Latin have anchored the back line. Iosia averages 3.26 digs per set, while Latin averages 2.22.
Additionally, Iosia ranks third in the country in service aces per set with 0.65. She also helps Alcorn rank third in the nation as a team in that category with 1.96 aces per frame. Iosia has fired 67 aces in 28 matches this year.
MVSU (5-26, 2-14 SWAC) is eliminated from postseason contention but is looking to end its season on a high-note. Tyler Caliste paces the team with 248 kills on the season, while Taylor Selfridge has spiked 231 balls.
The Lady Braves are 45-35 all-time against the Delta Devilettes.
