Braves Conclude Non-Conference Slate at USF

TAMPA – The non-conference finale for the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will take place Friday evening when the Braves square off against USF at 6 p.m. (CT) at the Yuengling Center.
 
Alcorn (4-7) has won three of its last four games, including a three-game home winning-streak over Rust College 103-66, Champion Christian 109-45 and Fisk University 75-45. The Braves have outscored the opposition 366-211 at home this year.
 
The sharp-shooting Braves lead the SWAC in three-pointers made per game with 8.8. Individually, junior Maurice Howard is first in the league with 3.6 threes per outing. Alcorn also leads the conference in scoring defense (69.5 ppg) and steals (8.64 s/pg).
 
Junior Deshaw Andrews ranks first in the league in steals with 2.1 per game. He averages 13.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. Andrews tallied back-to-back 20-plus outings with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Savannah State, and a career-high 26 points and seven rebounds at Mississippi State.
 
Howard averages a team-high 14.5 points per game. He's coming off four consecutive matches of at least 15 points including a career-high 26 against Rust College. Howard ranks second in the SWAC in minutes per game (33.4 mpg), third in three-point percentage (.386), fourth in assists (3.7 apg) and fifth in assist:turnover ratio (1.1).
 
USF (8-2) enters play on a four-game winning-streak with victories over Stetson 75-71, Colgate 73-63, Appalachian State 76-69 and FIU 82-73. The Bulls defeated Alabama A&M 80-63 in their season-opener on Nov. 6.
 
Alexis Yetna averages a double-double with 10.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per outing. David Collins is the team's leading scorer with 15.5 points per outing. Defensively, the Bulls limited the opposition to just 67.4 points per game.

NOTES
- The Braves are looking for their first-ever win over USF. It will be the fifth meeting between the two programs and the first since 2005-06.
 
- Alcorn is going for its first non-conference win over a Division I opponent since 2012-13 when it topped Samford 69-65 in overtime. However, all wins from 2012-13 were vacated by the NCAA. Prior to that season, the last DI non-conference win was against Jacksonville State 70-68 in 2003-04.
 
- In the win over Champion Christian, sophomore Troymain Crosby registered the second triple-double in school history with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He averages 10.6 points per outing.
 
- Alcorn is in the midst of a loaded non-conference schedule which includes trips to Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Liberty, Mississippi State, UAB and South Florida.
 
- The Braves are one of three teams in the country without a freshman on the roster along with South Alabama and UT-Martin.
