Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Crosby Records Second Triple-Double in Program History in Lopsided Win over Champion Christian

LORMAN, Miss. – A historic night for Troymain Crosby saw the sophomore register 18 points, 10 rebounds 10 assists to headline a 109-45 drubbing for the Alcorn State University men's basketball program over Champion Christian on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Crosby becomes just the second student-athlete in the history of Braves (3-6) basketball to finish with a triple-double and the first since Eddie Archie against Prairie View A&M in 1983.

Crosby is also just the fourth Alcorn men's basketball player to ever dish out 10 assists in a single game and the first since Alleo Frazier against Jackson State in 2003. Jeff Cammon also did it against Grambling State in 2002, and Archie four times.

The Laurel, Mississippi native was 7-for-15 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. He completed the triple-double with an assist to junior Devon Brewer on a lay-up with 1:18 remaining.

Not to be overlooked, but Brewer ended with a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior Reginal Johnson neared a double-double with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds.

Five Braves scored in double-figures. Juniors Deshaw Andrews and Maurice Howard poured in 17 points apiece. Howard also distributed seven assists.

Alcorn shot .519 (41-79) from the floor and .452 (14-31) from long range. They held Champion Christian to a .274 (17-62) shooting mark and .200 (5-25) from beyond-the-arc.

The Braves held enormous edges of 63-27 in rebounding, 40-14 in points in the paint, 42-12 in points off the bench and 18-0 in points off turnovers.

CCC had three student-athletes score 11 points including Austin Hall, Vernon Burns and Tarrance Davis.

The game was close early with Alcorn up 16-13 when it reeled off eight straight points including a pair of lay-ups by Crosby to lead 24-11 midway through the half. A 17-4 run extended it to 41-17 with 1:46 remaining as Andrews was starting to find his rhythm inside. Alcorn led 46-22 at the break after a buzzer beater inside by Crosby.

The Braves continued to pour it on early in the second. A three-pointer by Howard extended it to 56-26 at the 17:39 mark. A three-pointer by Andrews pushed the advantage up to 75-34 with 11:00 left.

The margin went up to 50 points, 87-37, after a pair of free throws by Crosby at the 8:48 mark. Alcorn's largest lead came on its final possession on an inside bucket by Andrews.

The Braves have a quick turnaround as they'll play again tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Fisk University. The game was reschedule from its original Dec. 15 date.

Quoting Alcorn head coach Montez Robinson
Opening Statement
"It was definitely a well-executed game. Our goal was to go out and execute. We wanted to get better in all phases of the game. We set goals. We wanted to be 15-plus on the rebound advantage. We wanted to get to the free throw line at least 20 times. We wanted to get more paint touches. We wanted to do the things to get better going toward our first conference game on January 5. That's what the preseason is for. I told the guys just go out there and play, have fun. I think the rotations are good. The coaches are doing a great job getting everybody in. When someone isn't fresh they're letting me know to get the guys rotating in and out. They did a great job of keeping the game balanced. We're better when we play 10 guys. The defensive energy is really good when we can rotate like that. Guys know they can go in and play hard."

On five double-figure scorers
"I was impressed with that starting line-up. When you have four of five starters in double-figures that is huge. Then we have the big body, Reginal, coming off the bench and doing what he has been able to do. He's not even healthy yet. He's still not 100%. I'm really pleased with where he is and what he is trying to give us.

On Troymain Crosby
"For Troymain Crosby to have a triple-double is amazing. Up until the last minute of the game he had zero turnovers. Whenever you get one guy with a triple-double and another guy with a double-double that's a great day of basketball. In my four years of being here I haven't had a team get 28 assists in a game. That's awesome. That lets you know that the guys are sharing the basketball. They're looking for one another and there's no selfish play going on. Out of everything on the box score tonight, the 28 assists was the most impressive stat to me tonight."
