Alcorn Readies for Big Weekend at SWAC Round-Up

BATON ROUGE, La. – Going up against conference competition for the first time this year, the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs will lace up for the first of two SWAC Round-Ups.
 
The action begins Friday when the men and women take on Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. at Highland Park Tennis Courts. The Lady Braves will close out the day in a match against Grambling State at 2 p.m. at Southern University Courts.
 
Saturday kicks off at 9 a.m. when both Alcorn squads return to Highland Park Tennis Courts to face Alabama State. Alcorn will stay at the same complex for its weekend finale versus Jackson State at 2 p.m. Saturday.
 
The Braves (0-4) opened the season on Jan. 21 with a pair of losses to Ole Miss. Due to rain cancelations, they went nearly a full month before their next match when they dropped 5-2 decisions to New Orleans and Mississippi College on back-to-back days on Feb. 19-20.
 
Junior Nuno Rocha won both of his singles matches earlier this week. He beat Christian Fjeldstad from UNO 6-4, 0-6, 6-0, and followed it up with an 8-3 victory over Trey Randall from MC. Freshman Stojan Stojanovski also posted a singles win at the No. 2 spot against MC with a 6-4, 6-0 result over Lucio Menezes.
 
The Braves won the doubles point against UNO after taking the top two matches and were leading in the third. Sophomore Suyash Gupta has been teaming with freshman Johnatan Parat, while Stojanovski has been paired with senior Kert Kilumets who is the 2017 SWAC Player of the Year.
 
The Lady Braves (0-6) will look to bounce back from a 7-0 defeat to MC. They've been led by junior Bianca Birkenstock who has played every match at No. 1 singles.
 
Last year, the Alcorn men posted a 4-2 record in conference, while the women were 5-3. Both teams made it to the semifinals of the SWAC Championships.
 
The 2018 SWAC Championships are slated for April 13-15 at the Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans. There will be a second SWAC Round-Up in the regular season on March 16-17 on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.
