BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alcorn State University baseball program is back in action Tuesday as the Braves (4-4) play a non-conference game against Southern (2-5) at Pete Goldsby Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Alcorn bookended a four-game series at Florida A&M over the weekend with an 8-5 win last Friday and a 7-2 victory on Sunday. The Rattlers took both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. With the score tied at 2-2 through four innings yesterday, Edward Jackson and Brendly Martina hit back-to-back homers to put the Braves ahead for good. The team added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth and held on for the 7-2 final. Jahborus Smith (1-1) picked up his first win of the season with 5.0 innings of work. He surrendered two earned runs on a hit and six walks while retiring four FAMU batters.

Jenkins and Justin Barna are both hitting .333 to lead Alcorn's bats. Following them are Der'Vincent Hamilton at .296 and Nicholas Hayes-Saltare at .292. Jenkins also has team highs with nine hits and three doubles. Hunter Wilson is hitting .222 with 10 RBIs on six hits, a pair of doubles, and a homerun.

Razedrick Winters has made three appearances in relief and owns a 0.00 ERA through 4.2 innings. He has given up three hits and a walk with five strikeouts and has earned two saves. Devon Key also has a 0.00 ERA after throwing 2.2 innings in one game. Zachary Perez (1-0) has a 3.00 ERA in 9.0 innings across three appearances, and Smith and Carlos Lopez (1-0) are both at a 5.73 ERA through 11.0 innings each.

The Jaguars were scheduled for a four-game series at Alabama State, but the final game on Sunday was postponed due to bad weather. The Hornets took game one 14-0 Friday and the first game of a doubleheader 12-6 on Saturday, but SU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the nightcap through the first four innings and went on to grab its second win of the season 7-3.

Rashard Raine is Southern's top hitter at .400, followed by Zavier Moore at .389 and Michael Wright at .333. Tyler LaPorte owns a .308 average and leads the Jags with eight hits. Moore has a team-high seven RBIs. On the mound, Wilhelm Allen (1-0) has a 2.25 ERA through 4.0 innings of relief and Daniel Franklin (1-0) has thrown 12.2 innings through two starts for a 2.84 ERA.

Tuesday is the lone meeting between the programs during the regular season. The Braves and Jags last squared off in the third game of the 2017 season, a 6-5 decision for the Purple and Gold. Down 1-0 after the second inning, Alcorn put up two in the third and two in the fourth before using its bullpen to halt a comeback. Alum Austin Willis-Greene grabbed the win after striking out five in 5.1 innings.
