Late Surge Not Enough as GSU Holds on 8-7

GRAMBLING, La. – The Alcorn State University baseball program stormed back from an 8-2 deficit with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth, but came up just short as the Grambling State held on for an 8-7 final Wednesday night at Wilbert Ellis Field.

Christian Acklin reached on a one-out single in the seventh and Wallace Rios Jimenez followed with a triple to right center to start the Braves' (5-10, 0-3 SWAC) charge. After Devin Walden was hit by a pitch, Der'Vincent Hamilton cut the Tiger's (10-8, 4-2) lead in half.

In the eighth, Brendly Martin hit a solo shot to left before Alcorn juiced the bases with two gone. Walden and Hamilton were both hit by pitches to walk in runs as the Braves made it an 8-7 game. GSU would get a strikeout swinging to halt the damage and the hosts retired Alcorn's batters in order to escape with the win.

Rios Jimenez went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, an RBI, and a run. Martina batted 2-for-5 with a homer, an RBI, and a run. Hunter Wilson finished 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a run. Jordan McGowan had a 1-for-5 effort at the plate and brought in a pair of Alcorn base runners. Defensively, Kasey Fillingame recorded eight putouts and Wilson followed with six.

George Osborne III (0-3) took the loss as he allowed eight runs on seven hits and four walks in four complete innings. The freshman lefty faced 24 batters in 17 at bats and retired four of the Tigers. Joe Smith tossed three innings of relief, punching out three and giving up one hit. Regynold Johnson entered the game in the eighth and retired one of the three batters he faced.

For the second game in a row, GSU jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the bottom of the first. Alcorn responded with two runs in the second as Edward Jackson singled with Braves standing on second and third, but the hosts added an insurance run in the third and two more in the fourth.

The Braves conclude the week in Itta Bena, Miss. for a three-game conference series at Mississippi Valley State Friday through Sunday. All three contests are scheduled for a 1 p.m. opening pitch at Magnolia Field.
