Lady Braves Pound Delta State 8-1, Men Drop Nail-Biter 5-4

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's tennis program stayed hot with a decisive 8-1 victory over Delta State, but the men were edged 5-4 Wednesday at the Cleveland Country Club.

The Lady Braves, who were coming off a 7-0 sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, went straight to business in doubles and cruised through all three matches. The team of juniors Marlene Maier and Klavdija Bukovec posted the most dominant victory with an 8-2 score at the No. 3 spot over Jemina Sorman and Nathalia Stelzer.

In singles, junior Bianca Birkenstock made quick work of Sorman at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-1. Maier saw similar success at No. 5 where she upended Sarah Nash 6-1, 6-0.

Another straight-set win came at No. 6 singles where Bukovec topped Kyra Holway 6-3, 6-2.

The Lady Braves pulled out a pair of third-set tiebreakers to close it out. Sophomore Anastasia Vaganova outlasted Nathalia Sato 7-5, 6-7, 10-8 at No. 3. Fellow sophomore Veronika Pytlikova clipped Stelzer 6-3, 5-7, 11-9.

Both Vaganova and Pytlikova also won at doubles earlier. Vaganova teamed with Birkenstock to win 8-5 at No. 1, while Pytlikova partnered with junior Ammaarah Tim to win 8-3 at No. 2.

On the men's side, the Braves found themselves in an early hole after dropping two of the three doubles matches. They won the top match 8-5 thanks to senior Kert Kilumets and freshman Stojan Stojanovski.

Kilumets, the 2017 SWAC Player of the Year, did his part again in singles as he came back to defeat Emile LeTerrier 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 at the No. 1 slot.

At No. 3 singles, freshman Johnatan Parat breezed to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Mason Vice. Sophomore Suyash Gupta also won in straight sets with a 7-6, 6-1 decision over Andrew Hildenbrand at No. 5.

The deciding match came at No. 6 singles. Junior Nuno Rocha dropped the first set 7-6 when he came back to win the second 6-4. Though, Timo Schmitz from DSU pulled out the tiebreaker 10-7 to clinch for the Statesmen.

The DSU men were coming off a 5-2 win over Jackson State.

The Braves and Lady Braves will return to conference play this weekend when they play in the second of two SWAC Round-Up events beginning Friday. The schedule will be announced Thursday and it will be played in Montgomery, Alabama with Alabama State University as the host institution.
