*Update: Due to bad weather in the area, the teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.

ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball programs is on the road this weekend as the team plays a three-game conference series at Mississippi Valley State Friday through Sunday. Tomorrow's series opener, originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, has been moved up to 11 a.m. to avoid expected bad weather in the area. The other two games at Magnolia Field will have a 1 p.m. first pitch.

The Braves (5-10, 0-3 SWAC) are coming off a pair of non-conference losses at Grambling State earlier this week. The Tigers jumped out to early leads in both games with an eight-run first inning on Tuesday and a five-run first on Wednesday. Alcorn rallied in the second game with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth, but the hosts held on for the 8-7 win and the series sweep.

Justin Barna enters the weekend hitting .343 to lead the Braves at the plate. Following him are Kyle Jenkins at .265 and Brendly Martina at .261. Jenkins has a team-high 13 hits, while Wallace Rios Jimenez and Barna are right behind with 12 each. Martina owns a .652 slugging percentage with three homers. Hunter Wilson leads the squad in RBIs with 14.

In the field, Wilson is at 89 putouts with six assists and a pair of errors for a .979 fielding percentage. Jenkins has 71 putouts and seven assists with two errors for a .975 percentage.

Razedrick Winters has two saves in five appearances and 9.1 innings pitched with a 2.89 ERA. Zachary Perez (1-0) owns a 4.50 ERA and has thrown 14.0 innings across five appearances. Carlos Lopez (1-1) is at a 5.06 ERA in three starts and 16.0 innings. The junior leads the Braves bullpen with 30 strikeouts after retiring 10 opposing batters in each of his starts.

MVSU dropped a pair of games to Eastern Illinois on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Delta Devils (1-14, 1-2) took 1-of-3 games at Jackson State for their lone victory this season.

Alcorn is in search of its first SWAC win of the season at Itta Bena. The team opened league play with a three-game series at Alabama State on March 2-4. The Braves could not solve the Hornets' pitching and were held to just one run across the three games.

Last season, the Braves took 2-of-3 games in both regular-season series against the Delta Devils. Alcorn holds an 8-4 record versus MVSU during Coach Richardson's tenure.
