Ramsey, Lindsey Extend Hitting-Streaks at SLU

HAMMOND, La. – The Alcorn State University softball program led early in both games of a doubleheader, but Southeastern Louisiana came out on top 9-1 and 10-5 Tuesday at North Oak Park.

Freshmen Amari Ramsey and Desirea Lindsey extended their hitting-streaks to seven games apiece for Alcorn (1-18, 0-0 SWAC). Ramsey recorded two hits in each game, including a lead-off home run to left field in the first inning of game one. It was her second homer of the season. She's also on a nine-game on-base streak.

Lindsey reached on an infield single in game one and a hit down the left field line in game two.

The Lady Braves outhit the Lady Lions (17-11, 4-2 SLC) 12-8 in game two. Senior Taylor Hughes paved the way with three hits and two runs scored. Junior Victoria Tyler also aided the attack with a pair of hits.

"We have done well at starting fast from an offensive standpoint the last few games, but we are a little too inconsistent right now in some areas," said Alcorn head coach Josef Rankin. "We've played some teams that are really unforgiving when it comes to free bases or extra outs, but overall there were some really good things today that we can build on as we move forward."

Alcorn got on the board with two runs in the first inning of the night cap. Hits by Ramsey and Hughes got it started, and an RBI single to left center by Tyler put the first run up. The Lady Braves scored their second on a sacrifice fly to right by freshman Malea Dickerson.

After SLU came back to take a 5-2 lead, the Lady Braves answered with three runs in the fifth to even it up 5-5. It came on five hits including RBI singles by Tyler and Dickerson. The Lady Braves tied it on a throwing error after sophomore Ambria Dorsey reached on a bunt single.

Dorsey pitched five innings for Alcorn and struck out three. Senior Robin Harrison started the first game and went 3.1 innings. Junior Winter Ridgeway was used as a reliever in both games.

SLU, which has wins this season over Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss, garnered 19 hits over the two games.

It marked the first games in seven days for Alcorn which has now used 18 different batting orders in 19 games this year.

The Lady Braves will host Rust College in a doubleheader Thursday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Alcorn begins SWAC action on the road at Southern the following day at 3 p.m. in the first of a three-game series.

"We've got to get going Thursday before we head to Baton Rouge for steps one, two and three," Rankin said.
