Road Swing Sees Braves Play Conference Series at AAMU

Game Notes | Live Stats

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alcorn State University baseball program is on the road this week as the team heads to Alabama A&M for a three-game conference series at Bulldog Field. Thursday's and Friday's games both have a 3 p.m. scheduled start, while the series finale on Saturday will have a 1 p.m. opening pitch.

The Braves (6-17, 1-8 SWAC) dropped a three-game conference series to Jackson State at home last weekend. Alcorn looked like it would take the series opener as the Braves held a 10-8 edge with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the Tigers hit a two-run shot to left to pull even and took the game in extras.

"Our mindset right now is to take one game at a time," said head coach Bretton Richardson. "Control the things that we can control. There's still a lot of season left and all of our goals are still attainable. I'm proud of the way our guys have continued to compete. We feel that no matter the score, we are never out of the game. This will help us as we finish the season on hopefully a high note."

Hunter Wilson leads the team at the plate with a .304 batting average. The first baseman has had five multi-hit games, six multi-RBI game, and is on an 11-game on-base streak. Nicholas Hayes-Saltare is hitting .295 and Justin Barna is close behind at .290. Defensively, catcher Kyle Jenkins has 122 putouts with 13 assists and four errors for a .971 fielding percentage. Wilson follows with 105 putouts, three assists, and a pair of errors for a .983 percentage.

Joe Smith (1-0) owns a 4.50 ERA through 10.0 innings of relief. Jahborus Smith (2-3) has thrown 27.1 innings, made five starts in six appearances with a 4.61 ERA, and has one save. Carlos Lopez (1-1) has pitched 30.0 innings through five starts for a 4.80 ERA. He leads the bullpen with 38 strikeouts.

The Bulldogs (6-19, 3-6) took 1-of-3 conference games at Mississippi Valley State last weekend and are coming off a 13-10 loss at North Alabama on Tuesday. Alabama A&M fought back from a ten-run deficit in the top of the eighth inning, but fell short at Mike D. Lane Field in Florence, Ala.

Joannes Diaz is batting .360, Dalton Mitchell .354, and Carson McGregory .310 to lead AAMU offensively. Mitchell leads the team with 28 hits, while McGregory owns a team-high 11 RBIs. In the field, McGregory is at 138 putouts with six assists and two errors for a .986 fielding percentage.

Jaret Britt (2-4) has a 4.21 ERA in eight appearances and six starts with 36.1 innings tossed. Casey Warner (0-1) follows with a 4.50 ERA, and Jose Figueroa (0-2) is at a 5.97 ERA.

Last season, the Bulldogs took 5-of-6 games as AAMU won all three games in Lorman and 2-of-3 contests in Huntsville. In the 12-1 victory on April 30, Daniel Belmont tossed six innings and fanned eight Bulldogs while allowing just one run on four hits. At the plate, Wallace Rios Jimenez extended his on-base streak to 35 games and registered a career-high five RBIs. Kirt Cormier, Der'Vincent Hamilton and Brandon Barna each recorded two hits in the game and Hamilton scored three runs.
