LORMAN, Miss. – In their final tune-up matches before the SWAC Championships, William Carey topped the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs by identical 4-1 scores Tuesday at the Alcorn Tennis Complex.
It was the second home match in as many days for Alcorn after not hosting for four years. The Braves ended the regular season with a 5-13 (4-2 SWAC) record, while the women finished 6-14 (4-4 SWAC). Both teams swept Mississippi Valley State 5-0 yesterday.
Both the men and women started slow and dropped the doubles point. The men found themselves playing for third-set tiebreakers in each of the top three courts. Though, WCU pulled out two of the three to take a big edge.
Senior
Kert Kilumets continued to lead the way for the Braves and won at No. 1 singles. He defeated Paul Chabaud 7-6, 4-6, 10-6. Kilumets is now 8-6 at No. 1 singles including a 5-0 record in conference.
The Lady Braves were paced by junior
Ammaarah Tim who took down Maria Andreeva in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
The women's match score was closer than the 4-1 indicated as the Lady Braves were putting up a fight in a pair of unfinished matches. Sophomore
Anastasia Vaganova was cruising 6-3, 4-2 at No. 4 singles, while junior
Marlene Maier dropped the first set 6-3 but was up 3-1 in the second. Maier was also winning at No. 3 doubles with fellow junior
Klavdija Bukovec when WCU clinched.
Alcorn will now turn its attention to the 2018 SWAC Championships at the Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans. In quarterfinal matches, the fourth-seeded Braves will take on Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. Friday, while the fifth-seeded Lady Braves will face Southern earlier that morning at 9 a.m.
