JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball program will head to the state capital this weekend for a three-game conference series at Jackson State's Bob Braddy Field. The teams will play at 6 p.m. Friday, at 3 p.m. Saturday, and at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Alcorn earned a 2-1 conference series win over Mississippi Valley State last weekend but is coming off a 15-2 loss to Grambling State on Tuesday. The Braves (10-30, 5-13 SWAC) held a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth inning when the Tigers took over with 10 runs on five hits.
Der'Vincent Hamilton brought in both of Alcorn's runs as he went 2-for-3 with a double.
Justin Barna hit a perfect 1-for-1 on the night and scored a run while
Wallace Rios Jimenez finished 0-2 with a walk and a run.
Entering this weekend's East Division meeting, Barna has a team-best .301 batting average. Hamilton follows at .279, Rios Jimenez is hitting .252, and
Kyle Jenkins is right behind at .250. Hamilton has a team-high 38 hits and Jenkins owns 15 extra-base hits.
Hunter Wilson is the RBIs leader with 27 on the season.
Devin Walden has stolen 11 bags in 17 attempts.
On the defensive side, Jenkins has 223 putouts with 22 assists and four errors for a .984 fielding percentage. Barna is at a .970 average with 120 putouts, nine assists, and four errors. Rios Jimenez has earned 76 putouts with 71 assists and nine errors (.942).
Carlos Lopez (3-2) is the ace and leads the bullpen with a 5.04 ERA through nine starts. The junior has a league-best 64 strikeouts and was named the Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his effort last Friday against the Delta Devils.
Jahborus Smith (2-8) brings a 6.39 ERA across 10 starts and 12 appearances and ranks second in the SWAC with 56 punchouts.
Bukhari Brown (1-6) is the third starter in the weekend rotation and has a 9.80 ERA in 10 starts and 11 appearances.
Alcorn hosted the Tigers (26-14, 15-6) for three games back on March 23-25, with JSU winning all three. The Braves had an opportunity to take the opener with a 10-8 advantage and two outs in top of the ninth, but the visitors tied the game on a two-run shot to left and scored seven in extras to steal the game.
JSU currently sits atop the division standings and is coming off a 2-1 conference series win over Alabama State. The Tigers edged the Hornets 9-7 in the opener and secured a walk off, come-from-behind win 14-13 in game two.
Raul Hernandez leads JSU at the plate with a .405 average, followed by Stephan Vidal at .357 and Dezmond Chumley at .352. The Tigers have seven players hitting above .300.
Mark Watson (4-2) owns a 2.41 ERA with a complete-game shutout. Jose Tirado (2-1) has a 3.43 ERA, and Kevin Perez (8-4) adds a 4.36 ERA.
