JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball program held a 4-1 advantage through five and a half innings, but Jackson State fought back with a five-run bottom of the eighth to earn a 7-4 comeback win Sunday afternoon at Bob Braddy Field. With the decision, the Tigers (28-15, 17-7 SWAC) grab the conference series 2-1.
Â
The Braves (11-32, 6-15) were led offensively by
A.J. Makarewicz, who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
Devin Walden hit 1-for-2 and brought in a run, while
Hunter Wilson batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Jordan McGowan and
Justin Barna both posted 1-for-4 efforts, with McGowan hitting a double and scoring a run and Barna earning an RBI.
Â
Bukhari Brown (1-7) gave up seven runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks to take the loss. The junior threw 141 pitches across 7.2 innings and fanned four of the 37 batters he faced.
Razedrick Winters made a relief appearance and struck out the only batter he saw.
Â
Neither team scored until JSU plated a run in the fourth. After the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and moved up on a sacrifice bunt, the hosts put runners in scoring position as the Tiger batter singled to the gap in left center and took second on the throw. Following a ground out to short, a bunt single to third gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
Â
Alcorn responded with a three-run fifth inning. McGowan started with a double to center and Makarewicz beat out the throw for a bunt single as the Braves had runners on the corners.
D'Vennio Warner worked a full count to juice the bases and Walden drove a 2-1 offering to center for an RBI single.
Wallace Rios Jimenez then walked to make it 2-1 and Warner touched home on Barna's sac fly to center.
Â
The Braves made it a 4-1 game in the sixth as Wilson scored from third on a Makarewicz single. JSU cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning after a leadoff double, a wild pitch, and a ground out. After a scoreless seventh, the Tigers hit a three-run home run to left to highlight a five-run inning. Alcorn got runners on the corners in the top of the ninth, but with two outs JSU induced a fly out to center to bring the game to a close.
Next weekend sees Alcorn wrap up league play as the Braves host Alabama A&M for a three-game series starting Friday.
