Braves Open Six-Game Road Swing at Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, La.
– The Alcorn State University baseball program opens a six-game road swing this week, starting with a pair of 6 p.m. contests at Nicholls State Tuesday and Wednesday at Ben Myer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

 

Alcorn dropped a three-game SWAC series to Alabama State last weekend. After lightning interrupted play Friday, the teams resumed play late Saturday. The Purple and Gold built a 5-2 lead through the eighth, but Alabama State tied the game with a three-run ninth and scored a again in the 11th to take the series opener in extras. The visitors then won both games of a doubleheader on Sunday.

 

Nicholas Hayes-Saltare is hitting .324 to lead the Braves (8-22, 3-12 SWAC) at the plate. Justin Barna follows at .298 and Hunter Wilson is batting .291. Wilson leads Alcorn with 30 hits and 25 RBIs. Kyle Jenkins owns a .242 batting average and has 11 extra-base hits. Devin Walden has stolen nine bases in 12 attempts.

 

In the field, Jenkins has recorded 160 putouts with 16 assists and four errors for a .978 fielding percentage. Wilson is at 105 putouts with eight assists and two errors for a .983 percentage.

 

Carlos Lopez (2-1) has a 4.61 ERA through seven starts and 41.0 innings pitched. The junior leads the bullpen with 52 strikeouts. Joe Smith (1-0) is at a 5.11 ERA through 12.1 innings and eight appearances. Jahborus Smith (2-6) has made seven starts in nine appearances with a save for a 6.21 ERA. Razedrick Winters (0-2) earned three saves in 11 appearances with a 7.32 ERA.

 

The Colonels (11-21, 5-7 Southland) are wrapping up a six-game home stand and earned a 4-3 win over Sam Houston State Sunday behind 8.1 strong innings from junior pitcher Jacob Bedevian.

 

Nicholls State is led offensively by redshirt junior infielder Brady Bell, who is hitting .324 with seven doubles. Junior infielder Ethan Valdez has a .303 average and senior outfielder Chet Niehaus .299. Senior outfielder Lee Clark leads the team with 26 RBIs.

 

Defensively, senior Gage Teer has 252 putouts with 18 assists and six errors for a .978 fielding percentage. Senior Kyle Knauth is at a .991 average with 178 putouts, 33 assists, and a pair of errors.

 

Parker White (2-1) owns a 3.70 ERA through 24.1 innings, Bedevian (1-5) is at a 5.06 ERA across 53.1 innings, and Cayden Hatcher (1-4) has a 5.13 ERA in 47.1 innings.

 

The teams played two contests last season, with the Colonels winning 13-5 and 7-6 on March 28-29.
