Tennis Makes Quick Work of MVSU in Home Victories

LORMAN, Miss. – In its first home matches in four years, the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs both defeated Mississippi Valley State 5-0 on Monday at the revamped Alcorn Tennis Complex.
 
Neither the men (5-12, 4-2 SWAC) nor women (6-13, 4-4 SWAC) dropped a single game in any match.
 
"Our teams felt amazingly comfortable playing at home. It's nice not having to travel to a competition and it was extremely satisfying to play here," said Alcorn head coach Anthony Dodgen. "MVSU is in its first-year trying to rebuild its program from scratch, and we have a lot of respect for Coach [Riley] Murry and his team for coming down."
 
Senior Kert Kilumets kept his undefeated streak alive by cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over John Sansing at No. 1 singles. Kilumets has never lost a SWAC singles match in his career at Alcorn.
 
Freshmen Stojan Stojanovski and Johnatan Parat saw similar success, posting 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively.
 
For the women, Alcorn's top three of junior Bianca Birkenstock, junior Ammaarah Tim and sophomore Alessandra Maganuco registered 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles.
 
The matches did not count toward the team's conference records. They had already met at the second SWAC Round-Up with Alcorn winning both matches.
 
Both the men and women will remain at home tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they host William Carey. Alcorn is prepping for the 2018 SWAC Championships which will be held April 13-15 at the Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans.
