Braves Drop First-Round Game to TSU

2018 SWAC Tournament Bracket

NEW ORLEANS
– The Alcorn State University baseball program took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but top-seeded Texas Southern pulled away 10-3 to grab the opening-round game of the 2018 SWAC Championship Tournament Wednesday at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

With the loss, the Braves (12-38) will play a 9 a.m. elimination game tomorrow against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the third seed out of the West. The Golden Lions fell 13-3 to number two seed Jackson State in seven innings.

Nicholas Hayes-Saltare batted 2-for-3 with a walk, brought in a run, and scored another to lead Alcorn at the plate. A.J. Makarewicz also posted a 2-for-3 effort and scored a run, while Kyle Jenkins went 2-for-4 with a run. Devin Walden finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, Der'Vincent Hamilton hit 1-for-4, and Justin Barna went 1-for-5 with an RBI.

Jahborus Smith falls to 2-12 with the loss after giving up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits and six walks. The senior from Columbia, Miss. faced 32 batters in 6.0 innings of work and recorded five strikeouts. Razedrick Winters pitched 2.0 innings in relief and allowed a pair of runs on four hits and two free passes.

The Tigers (24-26) opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third. After TSU loaded the bases on a pair of throwing errors and a hit by pitch, the next batter dropped a bunt single for the first run in the game. The Braves limited the damage, however, as the next Tiger grounded into a 6-3 double play.

Alcorn responded with three runs in their next time at the plate. Jenkins started off the fourth with a single to second and moved up to third on a Makarewicz single through the left side. Hayes Saltare then singled to right to get the Purple and Gold on the board and took second on a throwing error by the TSU right fielder. Walden put the Braves in control 2-1 with a bunt single, scoring Makarewicz from third, and Barna made it a 3-1 game with another hit to right.

TSU pulled even with two runs on as many hits and an error in the bottom half of the frame. The Maroon and Gray wrestled back the lead in the fifth as a double to right center scored a runner from first. The Tigers then added insurance with a four-run sixth and brought in single runs in the seventh and the eighth to round out the scoring.
