SUMMIT, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's soccer program secured a 3-1 decision Tuesday in a preseason exhibition at Southwestern Mississippi Community College.

The Lady Braves and Lady Bears played three thirty-minute periods in the contest. After a scoreless first, senior Yaira Guardado chipped a shot over the home team's keeper to put Alcorn on the board. The hosts pulled even after putting away a saved shot that Alcorn's back line couldn't clear, but Guardado again provided some offense for the Purple and Gold. With the ball near midfield, the San Diego native laced a shot that caught the Lady Bears' goalie off guard to make it a 2-1 advantage.

In the final 30 minutes, Alcorn continued to press its attack. Junior Anjelica Dugan and redshirt-sophomore Nahvia Rodriguez both took shots on goal before sophomore Mireya Gonzalez earned a penalty kick late. The Burbank, Calif. then buried her shot for the final tally.

"Today's game really opened our eyes to what we need to work on as a group, both mentally and physically in preparing for our next game," said Gonzalez. "We got the win and our chemistry is there, but we need to work on that as well."

"We're excited for Sunday's game and hopefully we'll win," added Guardado.

Alcorn starts the 2018 regular season Sunday with a 7 p.m. game at Southeastern Louisiana.
