HAMMOND, La. – After a 3-1 preseason exhibition win at Southwestern Mississippi CC last Tuesday, the Alcorn State University women's soccer program is set to open its 2018 season this Sunday at Southeastern Louisiana.

The game will be held at Strawberry Stadium and is scheduled for a 7 p.m. opening kick.

"We get the season going tomorrow," said head coach Junior Noel, who enters his second season. "Ideally, we would have liked to have some more practice under our belts, but we are competitors and would compete anytime given the opportunity. We are currently about 60 percent and we still have a couple huge pieces still to come in. We spent this past week focusing on our defensive shape when not in possession and being patient when we are."

Senior Yaira Guardado scored twice and sophomore Mireya Gonzalez converted a late penalty kick to highlight the action versus the Lady Bears. Alcorn returns 12 players from last year, including seven starters, and was picked to finish ninth in the SWAC Preseason Poll.

SLU dropped an 0-1 exhibition at South Alabama on Aug. 11 and was scheduled to play at Jackson State on Friday, but the game was called in the 58th minute due to inclement weather. The Lady Lions held a 1-0 lead, but the game was not considered official as a minimum of 70 minutes must be played.

The Lady Lions were picked to finish ninth in the Southland Preseason Poll.

Sunday marks the eighth meeting in the all-time series, with the Green and Gold sporting a 7-0 record. The two squads last met in Lorman, Mississippi in 2014, with SLU earning a 9-0 decision. Alcorn is also in search of its first goal against the Lady Lions.
