Team Gold Wins Scrimmage, Lady Braves Prepare For USM Classic

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program is set to begin their 2018 season following the team's Purple vs. Gold scrimmage Monday night at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

With the Lady Braves divided into two squads, Team Gold prevailed and won the scrimmage in straight sets.

"One of the positives I saw tonight was that we were definitely running and executing our offense," said head coach Chelsey Lucas. "We talked through the spring and summer about being mentally strong, to be able to run our offense and defense and execute in everything that we do. When we practice in the gym against ourselves, we're practicing with a level of intensity that will prepare us to play for a conference title. We are a young team and we can only grow from here. We have a lot of potential."

The Lady Braves open the season on the road as they head to Hattiesburg this weekend for the University of Southern Mississippi Classic. After a 7 p.m. match against East Carolina on Friday, Saturday sees Alcorn playing two matches. The Purple and Gold face the host Golden Eagles at 11 a.m. before wrapping up the tournament at 4:30 p.m. against Spring Hill College.
