Lady Braves Look to Keep Rolling at UIW Cardinals Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Coming off back-to-back victories, the Alcorn State University volleyball program will look to extend its winning-streak this weekend when it takes on Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. Friday, and the host institution Incarnate Word at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the McDermott Center.
 
The Lady Braves (2-5) started to get hot last Thursday when it pulled out a five-set victory over William Carey. Alcorn then kept it going Monday and won the first eight points of the match en route to a 3-0 sweep over Tougaloo.
 
Freshman setter Jurnee Calhoun was named the SWAC Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday. She dished out 110 assists (11.0 aps) in three matches last week, including a career-high 49 assists and 10 digs versus WCU. Calhoun also submitted 36 assists and six digs against Tougaloo.
 
On the season, freshman Sydney Joseph has paced the Alcorn attack with 59 kills. Senior Alondra Rivera Modesto is hitting at a team-high .275 percentage.
 
Defensively, sophomores Fiapaipai Iosia and Kaylyn Latin have anchored the back line. Latin averages 3.26 digs per set, while Iosia is at 2.88.
 
Iosia ranks third in the nation in aces per set with 0.92.
 
EWU is off to a strong 7-3 start to the season, its best start since 2006. It has wins over UMass Lowell, Akron, UC Riverside, LA Tech (twice), Charlotte and Gardner-Webb.
 
Samantha Boever has quarterbacked the Eagles to 354 assists (9.57 aps). Puaoolelagi Sao and Catelyn Linke average 3.64 and 3.27 digs per set, respectively.
 
UIW is looking for its first win of the season after an 0-8 start. Autumn Lockley leads the team with 81 kills (3.12 kps) on the year.
 
The weekend marks the first-ever meeting between Alcorn and EWU. The Lady Braves and the Cardinals have played once before as UIW came out on top 3-0 in 2016.
