SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Alcorn State University volleyball program wrapped-up the UIW Cardinals Classic on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18) to the host institution, Incarnate Word at the McDermott Center.

"This was a challenging weekend for us, but one we needed to have. This experience will help us grow and make us better in the long run," said Alcorn head coach
Chelsey Lucas. "We will keep our heads up and get back to work as we prepare for a huge conference weekend up next."

Three Lady Braves (2-7) tallied at least five kills. Sophomore
Daharri Thompkins led the way with seven, freshman
Sydney Joseph six and sophomore
Mae Lewis five.

Junior Barbara Cabo neared a double-double with eight digs and eight assists.
Â
UIW (2-8) was led by Bethany Clapp who notched 14 kills on 17 attacks. Pilar Gonzaba ended with 29 assists and seven digs.

Alcorn kept it close early 6-6 in the first set after a kill by freshman
Havanna Garza. The Lady Braves trailed 13-10 when the Cardinals pulled away with four straight points to make it 17-10. Lewis hit for a .429 mark in the frame with four kills and an error on seven attempts.

Another competitive set came in the third as the Lady Braves tried to claw back in it. UIW led 10-3 early when Alcorn clawed back to cut the deficit to 16-12 after a kill by freshman
Simone Barren. Though, the Cardinals were able to close it out strong to end the match.

The Lady Braves open conference play next weekend at the first SWAC Round-Up, hosted by Southern. Alcorn will kick it off at 10 a.m. Friday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and will also play Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Grambling State and Southern.
