LORMAN, Miss. – After over a week off, the Alcorn State University volleyball program is back on the court this Thursday as the team hosts Mississippi College and William Carey (Miss.) in a tri-match at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Alcorn will play Mississippi College in the opening match at 2 p.m. and will wrap up the day at 6 p.m. against William Carey. The two visiting teams will face each other in the 4 p.m. match.
The Lady Braves (0-4) fell in straight sets to Wiley College on August 28 as the Lady Wildcats spoiled Alcorn's home opener. Freshman
Sydney Joseph leads the team offensively with 30 kills, followed by sophomore
Mae Lewis with 16. Sophomore
Jasmine Chambers and freshman
Jurnee Calhoun have combined for 71 assists, while sophomore
Fiapaipai Iosia has served a league-leading 14 aces (1.08 per set). Sophomore
Kaylyn Latin ranks fourth in the SWAC with 3.23 digs per set (42 total). Sophomore
Daharri Thompkins and Chambers have recorded six and five blocks, respectively.

The Lady Choctaws (3-5) competed in the two-day Reddie-Tiger Invitational, co-hosted by Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist August 31-September 1 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. MC earned a 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist, but fell in straight sets to Henderson State, Dallas Baptist, and Ouachita Baptist.
Tomorrow marks the sixth time Alcorn and MC have played each other, with the Lady Choctaws holding a 4-1 lead in the all-time series. The two squads met on October 11 last season in Alcorn's tri-match with MC and Tougaloo. After the guests claimed the opening set 26-24, the Lady Braves took the next three to win a close match.
William Carey (Miss.) | Sept. 6 | 6 p.m.
The Lady Crusaders (3-4) were at Xavier's (La.) Big Easy Blastoff last Friday and Saturday in New Orleans. WCU defeated Southern University at New Orleans 3-0 on the first day, but fell to Webber International and Point University in a pair of 3-1 losses on day two.
Alcorn and WCU meet for just the third time Thursday as the Lady Crusaders took both matches last season. The Red, Black, and White earned a 3-0 win at home on September 26 and won a 3-1 decision in Lorman on October 17.
